Since 1990, Bella Freud has carved out a unique niche where fashion meets film, literature, and interior design. Her eponymous label has cultivated a devoted following, including style icons like Kate Moss and Alexa Chung, who are drawn to her signature blend of intellectual depth and personal intimacy.
Freud’s aesthetic is a dialogue with her lineage. It carries the raw, expressive tailoring of her father, painter Lucian Freud, and the sharp psychological insight of her great-grandfather, Sigmund Freud. After honing her craft in the 80s under the legendary Vivienne Westwood, she founded and has transformed her brand into a comprehensive lifestyle world, encompassing ready-to-wear, cult-status fragrances, and artisanal homeware.
The SS26 collection, now available at WORKSHOP, showcases her unique gift for distilling complex emotion into a single, striking wearable statement:
- The 'Love Letter' Jumper, a "wearable love letter" inspired by the Nick Cave song, balances romance with Bella’s signature understated cool. Featuring delicate pointelle hearts on the chest and sleeve and playfully ‘signed off’ with a stitched “xx” at the cuff.
- The ‘Silencio’ Jumper evokes mystery and cinema, its blue artwork paired with a key motif that hints at secrets and hidden stories, drawing on the surreal, symbolic world of David Lynch.
- Freud’s ‘Love Is the Drug’ Socks bring her signature wit to accessories, featuring bold lettering and a subtle reference to the 1975 hit song by Roxy Music.
- The ‘Give Me Some Good News’ T-shirt delivers an ironic, optimistic refrain that is thoughtful, witty, and very of the moment.
- The iconic ‘1970’ series returns in oversized silhouettes, tactile mohair, and a ‘new era’ spin on the classic design. Born from a moment of spontaneity, Freud recalls “While messing around on my photocopier, I spied the date 1970 on a book page. I blew it up, cut it out, and pinned it to my black jumper. Its rough charm made me think of the early New York punk scene and Patti Smith.”
Witty, thoughtful, and effortlessly wearable, each piece is designed to illuminate the wearer rather than overpower them.
