Based on the East Coast of the North Island in Ahuriri, Napier, Martin Poppelwell is a renowned New Zealand artist known for his versatility across different art mediums.
Martin’s artwork covers a territory that combines painting, sculpture, drawing and pottery, taking a unique approach on diverse subjects including literature, poetry, mess, music, defeat and the trials of life to mention a few.
As part of his practice as an artist, Martin has collaborated with designers and architects. Notable is his ongoing work and conversation with WORKSHOP, in the form of drawings, painting on buildings and the creation of fixtures for our Mackelvie Street store in Ponsonby.
“Collaborating with WORKSHOP is such an exercise in fine tuning and requires a fine sense of humour and patience, all around, but the outcomes I am always pleased to see and wear” Martin says.
Continuing the collaboration, 5 drawings have been brought to life as printed t-shirts for WORKSHOP Summer 24/25:
While discussing the new prints, Martin explains, “These current drawings which are printed on WORKSHOP t-shirts, come directly from sketchbook pages which I draw in every day. They kind of touch on thoughts that float past, and the drawing process in ink sort of tries to catch them. I am very happy to see them land on these garments, beautifully printed as usual”
